It all began when Conner Albright was selected to attend Hoosier Boys State by the dean of Whiteland High School. Post 1919 in Greenwood, Indiana sponsored his attendance, setting the stage for a life-changing experience.

Dexter recounts their first visit to Post 1919, where they met Dave Everett, the then-commander of the newly formed post. Dave's enthusiasm and dedication was infectious, and despite Dexter's initial reluctance to get involved, he decided to support the post by becoming a member, out of gratitude for sponsoring Conner.

A Father's Unexpected Journey

What started as a simple act of support quickly evolved into something much more. Dexter, with his background in IT, found himself creating the website for the post, setting up social media accounts, and eventually taking on the role of first vice commander. "I didn't have the time, but there was a sense of duty," Dexter explains. "I wanted to help veterans and ensure the post was well-organized."

Dexter's involvement deepened, driven by his belief in giving back to those who had helped him in his life. "When I joined the National Guard at 20, I was lost. The military gave me direction and purpose. Helping others is my way of paying that forward," he says.

Conner's Path to the Space Force

For Conner, Hoosier Boys State was a pivotal moment. "I remember thinking I was in trouble when I got called to the dean's office," Conner laughs. "But it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. Once I realized I was selected for Hoosier Boys State, I was thrilled, and the program taught me about government, leadership, and the importance of civic duty.”

Conner's journey didn't stop there. Inspired by his father's service and his experiences at Hoosier Boys State, he pursued a degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering at Purdue University. His hard work and dedication paid off when he received a full ride from the Air Force and later got selected for the Space Force.

Reflecting on his decision to join the military, Conner says, "It was more than just a career choice. It was about giving back and serving a greater purpose. Hoosier Boys State played a significant role in shaping that mindset."

Today, Conner is set to embark on an exciting career in the Space Force, while Dexter continues to support Post 1919 and other veterans' organizations. Their story is a powerful reminder of the ripple effect of service and the lasting impact of programs like Hoosier Boys State.
